The Irish actor and writer — who appeared in a season 6 episode of Game of Thrones — got engaged to his wife, Naomi Sheehan, in June 2022. They got married in September 2023, just a few months after he was diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease, which rapidly “attacks the nerves that control movement so muscles no longer work” and is incurable, per the MND Association.

On April 8, Sheehan announced in an Instagram post that the Blue Lights actor, who was 35 years old, died the night before while in hospice care.

"He passed peacefully surrounded by family and friends. Words can’t describe how broken-hearted we are," Sheehan wrote in the post.

Following Patrick's February 2023 Motor Neuron Disease diagnosis, Sheehan served as a big support system, from attending fundraising walks to helping organize the actor's equipment.

In January 2025, Patrick thanked Sheehan for her support in an Instagram post after he won the Judges' Award at The Stage Awards in the U.K.

"I want to thank my incredible wife Naomi - who married me in sickness and in health - unfortunately health hasn't had much of a look in," he wrote. "Naomi has pretty much put her life on hold so I can keep acting. I cannot thank her enough. I love you so much."

More recently, in February 2026, Patrick gave his Instagram followers an update on his health, sharing that Sheehan was by his side as he spent over a week at the hospital getting tests done and speaking with doctors about the risks and implications of getting a tracheostomy, which he decided not to move forward with.

On April 8, Sheehan announced Patrick's death on his Instagram, praising the actor for his strength and impact throughout his life.

"It’s been said more than once that Mick was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged enough to come into contact with him, not just in the past few years during his illness but in every day of his life," she wrote in the post. "He lived a life as full as any human can live. Joy, abundance of spirit, infectious laughter. A titan of a ginger haired man."

She added, "We are so grateful for every person who supported us through the last few years."

Sheehan continued the post by sharing a quote from Brendan Behan that Patrick "loved."“The most important things to do in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink and somebody to love you," the quote read, with Sheehan adding, "So, don’t overthink it. Eat. Drink. Love."
