Terry Bradshaw has spent decades on live television leaning into a loud, self-deprecating routine on FOX NFL Sunday. On camera, laughing at his own blunders came easily. But off camera, his personal life was wrecked by three divorces that left him isolated and quick to shut down whenever conflict showed up. It took thirty years of failed relationships before the legendary quarterback and broadcaster realized what he really needed from his partner.

“It took me a while to figure it out,” Terry said on The School of Greatness – in an episode set to air on 5th October. “I needed a friend. I needed someone that I wanted to spend all my time with. I needed someone that I could talk to who didn’t judge me and ridicule me. And I needed a woman that made an effort to study and understand me and not take face value and then take the negative and go, ‘Well, I can’t handle this.’ Instead, saying, ‘Why is he acting like that? Why is he this? Why is he that? Is this a deal breaker? Okay, let’s talk about it.’”

But getting to that point took three painful marriages, as Bradshaw admitted about his wife, Tammy: “Now here’s the great thing about my wife. It didn’t happen overnight. It wasn’t love at first sight. It was lust at first sight because she’s awesome. She’s hot.”

Bradshaw first married former Miss Teenage America Melissa Babish in 1972, but they stayed together for only a year. That split – as Bradshaw recounted in another interview – made him “moody and depressed,” to the point that he “drank and hustled women in bars – a total jerk having a ball.” But after three years of dealing with that, he married Olympic figure skater Alicia ‘JoJo’ Starbuck in 1976. This one lasted just seven years before their split in 1983.

After three marriages, Terry Bradshaw is opening up about what really matters in love. Subscribe to stay on the legendary QB's candid insights and personal revelations.

In a Chicago Tribune interview, Terry admitted his marriage to Melissa was a “terribly immature decision.” For Starbuck, he noted, “I love her, but she didn’t love me.” That same year, 1983, he married family attorney Charla Hopkins – a relationship that lasted until 1999. After dating Charla for several years, the two married in 1983 and spent 16 years together, welcoming daughters Rachel (1987) and Erin (1989) before divorcing in 1999.

But when they split in ‘99, Bradshaw felt that blow the hardest. In one interview, he even admitted, “I could not bounce back from my divorce – emotionally – I just could not bounce back.” Anxiety attacks riddled Bradshaw, robbing him of his sleep and peace. But as Bradshaw sought help, that same year, he met Tammy, who was sorting through the fallout of her own divorce.

Scarred by past failures, neither wanted to touch marriage again. They dated for 15 years, living together while Bradshaw repeatedly pulled back whenever the relationship felt permanent. In July 2014, he finally proposed in the middle of a hallway, and the two flew to Hawaii to marry in private.

In 2021, seven years in, Bradshaw knew this wouldn’t last. The couple returned to Hawaii to renew their vows on their reality show, The Bradshaw Bunch. Standing at that altar again proved their daily routine had survived the friction that wrecked Terry’s earlier marriages. The reason this marriage lasted, as Bradshaw said himself on The School of Greatness, was because Tammy refused to let him hide behind silence, confronting him to try to understand him – fitting the bill of what Terry wanted in a partner all along.

“My wife makes me talk about stuff I don’t want to talk about,” Bradshaw added on the show. “A lot of men don’t want to talk about a lot of stuff. I didn’t want to talk about it. And then finally I’ll go, ‘Okay, all right, here’s the deal.’ And I’ll dump it out. And she’ll say, ‘Okay. All right.’ And then we talk about it. I met, fell in love with my buddy.”

Before Tammy, Terry Bradshaw had spent decades absorbing punishment on the gridiron. But staying seated for an uncomfortable conversation was the one challenge he kept running from. Finding a partner who refused to let him walk out the door finally taught him the accountability that even four Super Bowl wins could not.
