Tate McRae addressed speculation about her political beliefs in a new interview with Variety after collaborations and rumored relationships sparked questions from fans

McRae emphasized her support for causes like LGBTQ+ rights and women’s organizations through her merchandise and tour environment

“I think it’s pretty obvious what kind of person I am and the things I support,” she told Variety

Tate McRae is addressing questions about her political beliefs.

In a new Variety cover story interview, the Canadian pop star, 23, responded to claims she’s a MAGA supporter after her “What I Want” collaboration with Morgan Wallen and rumored romance with NHL star Jack Hughes fueled speculation.

McRae told the outlet about choosing not to firmly label her political stance. “I like to say my piece through organizations I support and the environment that I have on tour,” said the “Sports Car” musician, who previously released a hoodie on her merchandise store with a portion of proceeds going to LGBTQ+ charity The Trevor Project as well as the Global Fund for Women.

“I think it’s pretty obvious what kind of person I am and the things I support,” added McRae. “And I hope that my fans can see that through the things that I’m putting my energy towards.”

Some fans questioned McRae’s political leanings after she released the chart-topping collaboration “What I Want” with Wallen in May 2025 due to his controversial past.

In 2021, TMZ posted a video of the “Last Night” singer using the N-word while speaking to his friends. He later apologized, went to rehab and donated to the Black Music Action Coalition.

Wallen has not publicly endorsed President Donald Trump.

Further speculation about McRae’s beliefs was fueled by her rumored relationship with Hughes, who visited the White House with the U.S. men’s hockey team after earning a gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics and watched the president deliver his annual State of the Union address.

“Everything is so political. We’re athletes. We’re so proud to represent the U.S. and we get the chance to go to the White House, meet the president. You know, we’re proud to be Americans,” Hughes later told the Daily Mail. “No matter what your views are, we’re super excited to go.”

Elsewhere in McRae’s Variety interview, the “Revolving Door” artist spoke about her approach to romance as a public figure. “I try to keep my relationships as sacred and private as possible,” she told the outlet.

“I love the people in my life. They love me. You just try to keep that circle as positive and supportive as possible. And the outside noise, I can’t do anything about that,” added McRae. “Focusing my energy on something that I can’t control, it just puts me in a bad mood.”
