A late penalty in the Los Angeles Rams’ loss to the Denver Broncos has continued to draw criticism well after the final whistle. The call erased what appeared to be a crucial interception and gave Denver an opportunity late in the game.

The controversy grew after the Broncos receiver involved acknowledged that he exaggerated the contact, keeping the disputed call in the spotlight.

Kelly Stafford Backs Jason Kelce’s Criticism of Controversial DPI Call

Matthew Stafford’s wife, Kelly Stafford, joined the discussion Thursday by sharing a clip from the ā€œNew Heightsā€ podcast featuring Jason and Travis Kelce.

The brothers were discussing the defensive pass interference call involving Broncos receiver Pat Bryant and Rams cornerback Josh Wallace when Jason took particular issue with Bryant’s movement during the play.

Jason argued that officials should not reward players for exaggerating contact. ā€œTo me, that’s obvious, that’s not [defensive pass interference],ā€ he said while reviewing the play. He then focused on Bryant’s arm movement, saying, ā€œWhenever I see a guy’s arm go limp in the air, I think it should be mandatory that you don’t call it.ā€

Travis asked whether Jason was referring to a flop, prompting an even stronger response. ā€œI’m dead serious! I’m over on the flops,ā€ Jason said. ā€œI hate the fact that [Bryant] flailed his wrist; he went limp wrist. If you go limp wrist on a football field, you don’t get a call! That should be the NFL’s official stance: Limp wrist, no call! You’ve negated the call!ā€

Kelly appeared to agree with Jason’s assessment when she shared the clip on her Instagram Story, captioning it, ā€œNot the limp wrist šŸ¤£šŸ¤£šŸ¤£ā€

The discussion centered on a pivotal fourth-quarter sequence from Denver’s 30-26 win over Los Angeles.

On third-and-6, Broncos quarterback Bo Nix targeted Bryant, while Wallace appeared to intercept the pass. Officials instead flagged Wallace for defensive pass interference, wiping out the turnover and giving Denver a new set of downs.

Bryant’s postgame comments added another element to the debate. He acknowledged that he deliberately exaggerated the contact to draw the flag, saying, ā€œI did sell it just enough to get the flag… it was either the ball or the call. And we ended up getting the call.ā€

This admission gave Jason’s criticism a specific point of reference as he argued against rewarding exaggerated reactions.

The penalty proved especially significant because Wallace’s interception would have returned possession to the Rams while they held a 26-23 lead with just over a minute remaining, putting Los Angeles in position to close out the game.

Instead, Denver retained possession and scored the go-ahead touchdown in its 30-26 victory.

With that result, the Rams are #11 in PFN’s Team Impact Rankings with an Impact Score of 76.1, while the Broncos are way down at #22 with a score of 71.6.
