Nathan Fielder moved in with Elizabeth Holmes to film a documentary. He came away sure of only one thing: She lies.

Fielder and co-director Lance Oppenheim talked about You Can See Everything on Wednesday after a screening at the New York Film Festival. The documentary film follows the convicted Theranos founder and her partner, Billy Evans, at home during the 34 days before Holmes began serving an 11-year prison sentence for defrauding investors.

Holmes has maintained her innocence and has largely stayed out of public view. The documentary is the first time in years that she has spoken publicly at length. This comes after the film was hit with an R rating for 'graphic nudity.'

Fielder, who asked the audience not to spoil the film, said that meeting Holmes left him questioning his own instincts.

"When I met her, I remember having this weird experience where she seems so genuine at times. But then I'm like, 'No,' and clocking and tracking my thoughts and being like, 'Okay, I know she's a liar.' It was a weird mental thing. From there, we were like, 'Can we roll the dice on something if they were open to having cameras in?'" Fielder said.

The project began almost by accident. Fielder and Oppenheim were at the Magic Castle when a magician asked the audience to name a celebrity, and someone called out Holmes.

That reminded Oppenheim that Holmes had approached the studio A24 about documenting her life.

Fielder, who had read the 2018 book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley Startup, set up a meeting through the studio. A24 told the small crew they could abandon the film if no story emerged. The story, the directors said, came from their own disagreements.

"It wasn't until we started shooting that moments would happen — some of them are in the film — and then after Lance and I would talk about what we thought happened there," Fielder said.

"We'd completely disagree on what something meant to us and what we thought was happening. Then we were like, 'Oh, this is really interesting. If we can't agree on what's happening, there's something here.' And our curiosity sort of just, like, drove us from there."

A teaser for the film spread widely online. In it, Holmes looks into the camera and tells Fielder, "I don't have anything to deceive you on. Of course I'm not deceiving you. I'm engaging with you as a human being. Why would I deceive you? There's no reason for me to do that."

A later trailer showed Fielder living with the couple around the clock, at one point sitting on their bed.

"I cannot tell you how weird it was that we were there," Fielder said, drawing laughs.

"Truly, to this day, we're still like, anyways, sorry. I wouldn't think I'd be the person you would want for your final period. I'm a nice person, I do believe, but I'm not the most comforting. You know what I mean? I think you know."

Asked why Holmes and Evans chose him, Fielder said he could not say for sure. "She said, 'First and foremost, we see this as a human story,'" Fielder recalled.

"It's so hard to understand where they may have been coming from, but maybe there was a sense that inviting someone who was like a friend of theirs, no one would take that seriously. I don't know; it's so hard to speculate."

The film is Fielder's feature directing debut, following Nathan for You, The Rehearsal, and The Curse. Oppenheim, who directed the A24 thriller Primetime starring Robert Pattinson, also directed the documentaries Some Kind of Heaven and Spermworld.

You Can See Everything opens in theaters on October 16.
