Naomi Watts voices Peter Parker’s AI assistant E.V.I.E. in her first Marvel Cinematic Universe role

Watts reunites with Tom Holland 14 years after playing his mother in the 2012 film The Impossible

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has already surpassed $1 billion at the global box office in just six days

Naomi Watts has officially joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, even if fans may not have recognized her voice right away.

The actress, 57, revealed on Instagram that she secretly appears in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, voicing E.V.I.E. (E.V.), Peter Parker’s self-created artificial intelligence assistant.

“From playing your mom to playing your AI (100% human made),” Watts wrote alongside a photo of herself on a Zoom call with Spider-Man: Brand New Day director Destin Daniel Cretton.

She adds, “Congrats Tom, Destin, and the whole Spider-Man: Brand New Day team on the historic opening weekend!! Immensely proud to even be just a tiny part of this incredible film!”

The surprise cameo marks Watts’ first role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and reunites her with Tom Holland nearly 14 years after the pair starred together in 2012’s The Impossible.

In the acclaimed disaster drama, which is based on the true story of a family separated during the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, Watts played Holland’s mother. The performance earned her an Academy Award nomination and helped launch Holland’s career before he was cast as Peter Parker just a few years later.

This time around, rather than protecting Holland’s character on screen, Watts serves as the voice in his ear. As E.V.I.E., the AI companion helps guide Peter Parker through his latest adventure in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

The fourth solo Spider-Man film sees Holland, 30, return as Peter Parker alongside franchise favorites Zendaya as M.J. and Jacob Batalon as Ned Leeds, while newcomers Sadie Sink and Jon Bernthal join the expanding cast. Directed by Cretton, 47, the film picks up after the emotional events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, which left Peter facing a new reality after everyone he loves forgot his identity.

Now operating largely on his own, Peter must navigate life as a street-level hero while balancing his responsibilities as Spider-Man with the loneliness of starting over. With few allies to rely on, he turns to familiar friends and new partners, including the Punisher (Bernthal, 49), as he faces a mysterious threat that pushes him to redefine what being Spider-Man truly means.

Watts’ reveal comes as Spider-Man: Brand New Day continues its historic run at the box office. The film recently crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide in just six days, making it the second-fastest movie ever to reach the milestone behind only Avengers: Endgame.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now in theaters.
