She spent her first birthday married to Harry in a surprising way—by attending one of Harry’s friend’s weddings.
Meghan Markle married into the royal family on May 19, 2018, and three months after that big day with husband Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex turned 37 years old on August 4.
Meghan spent her first birthday married to Harry at an unexpected outing—she attended the wedding of one of Harry’s friends, as the Duke of Sussex served as best man. The couple attended the nuptials of Charlie van Straubenzee, also a close friend of Prince William’s, according to Vanity Fair.

Us Weekly later reported that Meghan “looked radiant” while spending her birthday “celebrating someone else.” Van Straubenzee married Daisy Jenks in an afternoon ceremony in Surrey, England, where Meghan wearing a Club Monaco colorblock shirtdress, a Philip Treacy hat, Aquazzura pumps, a knotted belt, and a Kayu clutch.

Harry, for his part, dressed in a morning suit and “kept busy chatting with fellow attendees.” Harry and van Straubenzee go way back—they attended Ludgrove School together as boys, and van Straubenzee was an usher at Harry and Meghan’s royal wedding at St. George’s Chapel a few months prior.

“Harry made time for Meghan amid the festivities, holding her hand as they walked together in the grounds of St. Mary the Virgin Church in Frensham,” Us reported.

The year prior, for Meghan’s 36th birthday, Harry and Meghan spent her birthday privately in Botswana, where they’d also famously had their third date in 2016 (and where they fell in love).
The year after Meghan’s first birthday married to Harry, Meghan turned 38 years old in 2019 and did so with a special new addition—their son, Prince Archie, who was born on May 6 of that year.
