A mother’s nerves turned into relief after she separated her twins at night for the first time in 10 years — and checked the camera the next morning.
Katie Jameson, of Vancouver, Canada, is the mom of 10-year-old twins Wally and Kenzie, who share an incredibly close bond.
“They can make each other feel good just by being close by,” Katie said. “It really just seems natural that they have a closeness that language can’t seem to describe.”
For the past decade, the twins slept in the same bedroom, sharing bedtime routines. But as they got older, Katie made the difficult decision to give them separate rooms to allow for privacy and space.
“We had come to a point where Kenzie deserved her own space to be cared for,” Katie said. “Separating them felt hard for everyone.”
Kenzie has Down syndrome, is autistic and non-speaking. According to Katie, Wally makes Kenzie feel loved and safe, while his sister’s presence makes him feel grounded and happy.
After their first night apart, Katie was making breakfast when Kenzie woke up.
“I was feeling nervous about how she would feel when she woke up, and kept an eye on the camera, which we have for safety measures since she is non-speaking,” she said. “Wally came into the room and saw on my phone that Kenzie was up, and told me he would go get her.”
What happened next brought Katie a wave of relief — and pride in both of her children.

"Watching that moment between them made me so happy and so proud of them both," Katie said. "It helped me understand that what we have helped them build together can’t be taken away, certainly not by a change of rooms — that foundation of love will always stay."
