King Charles still celebrates Princess Lilibet's birthday despite his estrangement from her parents, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

According to royal expert Tom Quinn, however, the monarch is withholding one gift until "the family feud dies down."

Harry's rift with his brother Prince William and their father Charles began when he and Meghan stepped down from senior royal duties in early 2020.

King Charles is determined to celebrate his granddaughter Princess Lilibet despite his ongoing estrangement from the young royal's parents, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. In June 2024, for example, the monarch sent a present to California for her third birthday; though the royal family didn't post about her on their official channels, that is standard protocol for non-working royals.

"King Charles had no intention of completely ignoring Lilibet's birthday, so he has sent a gift, along with a message," Tom Quinn, royal expert and author of Gilded Youth: A History of Growing Up In the Royal Family: From the Plantagenets to the Cambridges, told The Mirror at the time.

That said, there was a small caveat to the king's generosity, according to Quinn. Though he did indeed send a present, apparently there is a second gift waiting for Lilibet that will not be shared until Harry succeeds in making amends with the rest of the royal family. Recall that Harry and his older brother Prince William are not on speaking terms; Harry and Charles, meanwhile, have not made much progress in the way of reconciliation.

"[Charles] gave Prince George a beautiful handmade wooden swing with George's name carved on it, and he has plans to give something similar to Lilibet, but not this year," Quinn explained. "And not unless and until the family feud dies down."

Otherwise known as the "royal rift," the feud between Charles, Harry, and William began with Harry and Meghan's exit from the royal family in early 2020. The couple's bombshell interview with Oprah Winfrey, followed by Harry's 2023 memoir Spare, put further strain on the duke's relationship with his father and brother.

Back in 2024, "no invitations to Lilibet's party were issued to members of the royal family," Quinn shared. More recently, an old friend of Harry's told The Daily Mail that the 41-year-old is "sad" that his kids don't have a relationship with their British relatives.

"Archie and Lili are having a lovely time in California, but Harry is very sad that they are missing out on life with the rest of their family," the friend explained. "Harry feels his children are missing out on the extensive family network that their cousins are enjoying."
