Monroe and Keery appeared together at multiple high-profile events over the course of their relationship.

Keery—whose musical alter ego is Djo—has mentioned their split in several interviews.

As Steve Harrington in Stranger Things, Joe Keery has become somewhat of a heartthrob, in no small part thanks to his distinctive hairstyle. In October 2025, rumors started swirling about Keery’s relationship status after he was “arrested” by Sabrina Carpenter during her Short n’ Sweet Tour. Before then, the actor was known for his romance with Independence Day: Resurgence star Maika Monroe. Here’s what you about Keery and Monroe’s complete relationship timeline.

October 2017

In his August 2021 GQ profile, it was confirmed that the actor first met Monroe in 2017 “at a party in Los Angeles.” The publication also said of the relationship, “He doesn’t talk about her a lot, but her presence in Keery’s life is great enough that she pops up in every fourth or fifth anecdote, like a guest star we love to see.”

The couple made their red carpet debut on Oct. 26, 2017, to celebrate the second season of Netflix’s Stranger Things.

November 2017

Weeks after gracing the red carpet together for the first time, Keery and Monroe showcased their couple style once again on Nov. 17, 2017.

On this occasion, Keery supported the launch of Monroe’s 2017 movie, The Tribes of Palos Verdes, in which she starred opposite Jennifer Garner.

January 2018

It’s pretty safe to say that Keery’s trademark bouffant hairstyle stole the show during the couple’s next appearance. On Jan. 7, 2018, Monroe joined Keery and his hair at the InStyle and Warner Bros. Golden Globes after-party at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

Just 10 days later, Monroe and Keery took their love abroad to France. The two stars were photographed attending Valentino’s fall/winter 2019 menswear show during Paris Fashion Week on Jan. 17, 2018.

Days later, Monroe and the Free Guy star reemerged at the SAG Awards on Jan. 21, 2018. While Keery wore a black suit with a matching shirt, Monroe opted for a bright red gown with pockets.

The same night, the couple also made an appearance at Netflix’s SAG Awards after-party at The Sunset Tower Hotel in West Hollywood, California.

While Keery continued looking dapper in an all-black suit, the Longlegs star traded her red gown for a black dress featuring red flowers and a lace neckline.

March 2018

On March 1, 2018, Keery and Monroe were photographed together at an event hosted by Vanity Fair and Lancôme at Soho House in West Hollywood, California.

Vanity Fair editor Radhika Jones and filmmaker Ava DuVernay co-hosted the gathering, which was attended by actresses like Zendaya, Zoë Kravitz, Angela Bassett, Lupita Nyong’o, and Mindy Kaling. The publication even gave Keery’s hair a shout-out, writing that his “impressive pompadour was also spotted among the crowd.”

September 2018

Following a low-key summer, Keery and Monroe reemerged on Sept. 17, 2018, to attend the Emmy Awards together.

Monroe and Keery traveled to Milan, Italy, where they attended Salvatore Ferragamo’s fall/winter 2020 show on Feb. 23, 2019.

The runway show turned into a Stranger Things reunion as Keery and his girlfriend were joined by Charlie Heaton and Natalia Dyer, W reported.

June 2019

The two stars hit the beach together on June 6, 2019 for Saint Laurent’s spring/summer 2020 menswear show.

The Los Angeles Times reported that the runway show took place on the beach at Malibu’s Paradise Cove in Los Angeles. Keery and Monroe were joined by celebrities such as Miley Cyrus, Liam Hemsworth, Laura Dern, Lakeith Stanfield, Salma Hayek Pinault, and Keanu Reeves, the outlet shared.

September 2019

February 2020 was an extremely busy time for Monroe and Keery. First, the couple attended a Vanity Fair and Saint Laurent event celebrating the movie Parasite in Los Angeles.

In August 2020, Monroe shared an Instagram post featuring photos of Keery she’d taken for Interview Magazine. The accompanying article—in which the Stranger Things star was interviewed by his co-star, Finn Wolfhard—explained, “Joe Keery has it all: a hit show, a beautiful girlfriend (who photographed this story), and a first-ballot ticket to the TV Haircut Hall of Fame.”

Having dated since 2017, the couple remained together throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, with Keery telling GQ, “Over quarantine, it was like we spent so much time together, which was rare.” He continued, “I mean, that’s one of the disadvantages of dating someone else in the industry. There are advantages as well: somebody who kind of understands what’s going on with you in a pretty deep way. But yeah, I think she’s like me. She doesn't take it all too seriously.”

Keery’s GQ profile also revealed that the actor was wearing a “gold necklace,” which “was a gift from” Monroe. “I found it while we were traveling, and then it busted,” he told the outlet. “For Christmas, she got it remade for me.” GQ noted, “The symbol is simple but specific—a blue-white-and-red motif—though Keery doesn’t know the necklace’s exact provenance. He has worried it might be haunted, but he doesn’t exactly feel cursed.”

March 2022

The famous couple made two public appearances together in March 2022. The first took place on March 25, 2022, when Keery and Monroe attended Saint Laurent’s pre-Oscars party, which was hosted by Anthony Vaccarello in Los Angeles.

Reporting on the evening, Vogue noted that Keery was seen chatting with his Stranger Things co-star Finn Wolfhard and Yellowstone actress Kelsey Asbille.

October 2022

After wrapping work on the film Finally Dawn in Rome, Keery traveled to Calgary, Canada, to begin filming the fifth season of Fargo in October 2022. “I had also gone through a big breakup, right as I was leaving Rome, so I was really isolated and focused on my work,” Keery told Variety in June 2024, alluding to his split from Monroe for the first time. “My social life pretty much revolved around the show; my work life revolved around the show. We weren’t really leaving due to COVID-19.”

In April 2025, Keery briefly referenced his breakup with the It Follows star while discussing his new album—The Crux, released under his musical pseudonym Djo—with Nylon. “About two years ago, Joe Keery was going through a metamorphosis,” the outlet reported. “He was bulking up and eating lots of steak to play the villainous sheriff’s deputy Gator Tillman on season 5 of FX’s Fargo, which filmed in Canada. He also was just starting to write his third album, as his alt-pop project Djo, in the wake of his breakup with fellow actor Maika Monroe.”

Reflecting on that era of his life, Keery told Nylon, “I was dealing with my own personal shit, living in Calgary, basically only had two friends, was working out a ton.” He also shared, “I was going through a breakup when I started writing this album, and I feel like a big part of that process is going back to who you are—or who you were before.”

The split wasn’t confirmed until a year after it occurred, when Monroe was photographed kissing Ariana Grande’s ex-husband, Dalton Gomez, in October 2023.
