Jimmy Kimmel’s fellow late-night hosts each believe they have worked out why President Donald Trump reserves so much of his anger for the ABC star, and Last Week Tonight host John Oliver is perfectly happy for him to keep taking the hits.

Oliver and Seth Meyers joined Kimmel onstage Thursday during Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s week of shows in Brooklyn, bringing together three of Trump’s most persistent on-air critics.

Kimmel signaled what was coming during his monologue as he warned the president’s aide Natalie Harpe “to break out an extra box of Huggies for tonight’s program.”

During their later sit-down, the three hosts turned to Trump’s repeatedattacks on Kimmel and why the president appears to devote considerably less attention to Oliver and Meyers.

Oliver said Kimmel comes up “all the time” during stand-up shows he performs with Meyers at New York’s Beacon Theatre as part of their ongoing residency there.

“What way do you mean?” Kimmel asked.

Oliver explained: “Because they’ll normally say, like, how does it feel being, you know, disliked by the current president? And we always say as long as you’re on the air, we’re fine.”

The audience applauded and cheered.

“You draw all the ire,” Meyers joked.

“We are fully supportive,” Oliver added. “We are fully behind you the way that we’re fully behind a bulletproof vest.”

Kimmel then asked why they believed he was the late-night host who took the most heat from the president.

“I have a theory, but I’m curious,” Meyers offered. “Other than the fact you don’t like him, we think he would want to hang out with you. Like I think he sees us as a couple of dorks. And even if we were fans of his, he would have no respect for us.”

“But I’m sure he talks to people all the time about, like, ‘I think he has a pizza oven,’” Meyers added. “Everything about you. ‘You know David [Letterman] and Conan [O’Brien], he’s got a lot of famous friends. His parties sound awesome!’”

“We don’t have one pizza oven between us,” Oliver replied, to which Meyer followed: “He looks at us and is like: ‘Ugh!’”

“He never seems to get upset with Jon Stewart either. See, he sometimes occasionally will get upset with you, [Meyers],” Kimmel mused. “I think it’s this, what I think is he’s an old man and the only channels that are in his brain or maybe even like in the remote are the networks and then he’s got Fox News, and then he’s got the other ones that maybe he looks in from time to time.”

“So I think, first of all, I think he doesn’t have HBO, so you get a break,” he pointed at Oliver. “He definitely doesn’t have Comedy Central. He has no idea, like most people, no idea where to find that.”

Turning to Meyers, Kimmel added: “And I also think just as late as he stays up raging and tweeting and whatever it is he does, you’re on too late for him.”

Meyers said Trump’s social media activity nevertheless suggests he sometimes stays up for Late Night: “Every time he posts about my show, it is always when it’s airing, and it means the world to me, that he’s watching linear television with the ads is so important.”

The audience erupted in laughter.

“It’s viewers like him that keep the show going,” Kimmel joked in return.
