A new report unearthed that former Democratic Rep. Eric Swalwell and conservative political adviser Katie Miller had a fling while she was a 22-year-old intern on Capitol Hill

Disgraced former Rep. Eric Swalwell and political adviser Katie Miller reportedly had a fling while she was a 22-year-old single intern in Washington, D.C.

The Capitol Hill blog Sources Say Newsreleased a new report on Thursday, Aug. 6, that has called attention to a surprising previous relationship between Swalwell, a 45-year-old Democrat tanked by sexual abuse accusations, and Katie, the 34-year-old former adviser at the Department of Government Efficiency turned conservative podcast host.

The fling occurred well before Katie married Stephen Miller, the controversial U.S. homeland security adviser and deputy chief of staff to President Donald Trump. Swalwell recently faced sexual harassment and abuse allegations including from younger staffers, which ended his bid for California governor earlier this year and forced him to resign from office.

A source close to Katie tells PEOPLE that she was “exactly the type of woman that Eric Swalwell was accustomed to targeting” during their relationship.

“Katie was 22 at the time and a congressional intern — exactly the type of woman that Eric Swalwell was accustomed to targeting,” the source says.

Katie seemingly confirmed the report herself, writing on X, “I was an intern working on Capitol Hill.”

Before her stint at DOGE, Katie worked as a congressional staffer and aide to Vice President Mike Pence. When she left the Trump administration, she started her self-titled podcast, and she recently welcomed her fourth child with Stephen.

The podcast host has previously spoken out about Swalwell’s alleged conduct. In April, Katie shared criticisms of Swalwell amid a number of sexual assault allegations against the California Democrat.

“As someone who doesn’t normally believe all women, I believe her — and the many lined up behind her,” she wrote on X, referring to the former staffer and other women in D.C. who accused the former congressman of assault and misconduct.

“Eric Swalwell’s behavior was the worst kept secret on Capitol Hill,” Katie claimed at the time. “I’m positive she was not the only intern.”

In its report, which PEOPLE cannot independently verify, Sources Say News alleged that Swalwell attempted to use information about his prior fling with Katie as leverage with the Trump administration, in an attempt to prevent FBI Director Kash Patel from releasing files detailing his contacts with suspected Chinese intelligence operative Christine Fang.

“According to information provided to Sources Say News, Swalwell’s side raised the prospect that releasing the files could be viewed as a punitive attempt to weaponize the Department, pointing to the congressman’s long-concluded sexual relationship with former senior administration official Katie Miller from roughly a decade ago,” the blog reported.

After Swalwell sent Patel a cease-and-desist letter regarding the release of files related to his contact with Fang, the Justice Department communicated with Swalwell’s lawyer about the investigation, per the report. A DOJ official reacted to Sources Say News’ reporting, saying “the Department investigates crimes irrespective of politics.”

A source who is familiar with the investigation into Swalwell tells PEOPLE that the “DOJ is not aware of communications from Swalwell’s lawyers regarding Miller’s presence in the files.” The source close to Katie says she “had no knowledge of their relationship being discussed with DOJ until this report surfaced.”

PEOPLE attempted to reach Swalwell for comment on Sources Say News’ reporting.

In April, the former congressman suspended his campaign for governor of California after multiple women accused him of inappropriate behavior ranging from sending lewd, unwanted messages to drugging, raping and choking them.

The initial allegations against Swalwell emerged on April 10, when he was accused of sexual assault by a former staffer, whose identity has not been made public, and three other women. A few days later, two of the accusers — Annika Albrecht and Ally Sammarco — gave a joint interview to CBS News alongside Cheyenne Hunt, a political social media influencer, whose videos about the allegations against Swalwell went viral.

Just a few days after the interview aired, Hunt said she had heard from more than 30 women who claimed to have similar stories of their own experiences with the Democratic lawmaker.

Swalwell apologized to his wife of nine years, Brittany Watts, with whom he shares three children, in the statements he released upon suspending his gubernatorial campaign. One day later, he resigned from Congress, where he’d represented California’s 14th and 15th districts since 2013.

“To my family, staff, friends, and supporters, I am deeply sorry for mistakes in judgment I’ve made in my past,” he wrote in his X announcement. “I will fight the serious, false allegations that have been made — but that’s my fight, not a campaign’s.”

Following the CBS News interview, a woman named Lonna Drewes shared potentially the most damning accusations against Swalwell. In a press conference one day after the interview aired, Drewes came forward and tearfully accused Swalwell of spiking her drink at a hotel in 2018 before taking her up to his room.

“He raped me, and he choked me. And while he was choking me, I lost consciousness, and I thought I died,” she claimed.

The women said in their interview that said their goal was not politically motivated, and they instead hoped to protect the women who could have been future victims.

“I think we just prevented another 30 to 40 years, potentially, of him harming people if he were to stay in Congress,” Sammarco said. “As governor, he would have had even more power and more authority. And he would have felt vindicated too, you know, that he could run for higher office.”
