The Wild Things star Denise Richards recently opened up about how her marriage to Aaron Phypers spiraled into alleged physical and verbal a**se.
While speaking on Bunnie Xo’s Dumb Blonde podcast, the former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star reflected on her relationship with her estranged husband, per RadarOnline. She claimed that Phypers turned into a completely different person after their marriage.
Richards Says Phypers ‘Was a Completely Different Person’ After Their Marriage
Richards discussed how her relationship started changing over time. “Obviously, I was in an abusive marriage. It didn’t start out that way physically….Physically, emotionally, financially – all of it,” she claimed.
She explained to the podcast host that Phypers shifted dramatically. “He was a completely different person than the person I married,” Denise stated.
The pair tied the knot in September 2018 in Malibu after dating for around a year. When asked if she felt “conned” by Phypers, Richards responded, “Absolutely. Definitely. That’s the hardest part of it.”
Reflecting on the duration of their relationship, she added, “We were together for just over eight years and married for a little over six. I never thought I would ever be in this situation.”
Phypers filed for divorce on July 7, 2025, and mentioned July 4 as their separation date. He requested spousal support, legal fees, and personal property. Talking about why she stayed, Richards said, “Now I understand why people ask, ‘Why didn’t you leave?’ or say, ‘You should have known. You should have seen the signs.’ A lot of people ask me that, but I didn’t. I wouldn’t have married the person if I had.”
Richards shared that she learned a lot about her ex during their separation. She added that they split a year ago and are still waiting for their divorce to finalize, as reported by The Blast.

Richards Says Things Changed After Phypers Got His Green Card
Richards shared that she and Phypers were friends before they dated. However, she claimed that his personality changed after he received his green card.
The actress alleged that he became “verbally a**sive” slowly. Describing the first time he reportedly got physical, Richards said, “I’ll never forget the one time when he first hit me; I was so shocked. I was like, ‘Oh, f—. There’s no going back from this.'”
She also claimed that he slapped her across the face but expressed deep remorse afterwards. The star also admitted that one of her biggest mistakes was to give Phypers control over her finances. “He made me believe he was taking care of me and wanted to build a life with me. I really felt like we were building a life together,” she noted, adding that her daughter Sami Sheen saw through him early on.
She also alleged that Phypers owned guns and threatened her with them. She eventually moved out with her daughters, while Phypers stayed in their rented home with his family.
Richards stated that the breaking point happened when he allegedly slapped her in the hospital after her surgery.
“But when he did that to me, when I was that vulnerable, I knew, ‘He’s going to kill me,'” she claimed.
