Davis has faced health issues in the past. In 2021, his famed annual star-studded pre-Grammy Gala was postponed when he was diagnosed with Bell's palsy. The condition is an unexplained but treatable neurological disorder that causes paralysis or weakness on one side of the face, according to the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke.

The music mogul and Arista Records co-founder is credited with signing some of the biggest names in the music industry, including Billy Joel, Bruce Springsteen, Aerosmith and Earth, Wind and Fire, as well as Neil Diamond,Pink Floyd, Herbie Hancock and The Isley Brothers, according to his official website.

Davis earned a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1956 before being named general counsel of Columbia Records. By 1966, he was appointed vice president and general manager of the company.

The best-selling Clive: Inside The Record Business author continued making a name for himself at Arista Records, where he helped launch the careers of artists like Whitney Houston and Sean "Diddy" Combs. He played an important role in the creation of Barry Manilow's "Mandy," which became the singer's first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100.

Before a visit to Harvard Law School in September 2017, Davis told Harvard Law Today that it was never his intention to get into the music business.

"Oh, I had none, zero," he told his alma mater. "It was the furthest thing from my mind."

"I had come there right after my college years. My parents had passed away and I had no money, I had the munificent sum of four thousand dollars, I was incredibly grateful for the scholarship that I had and that paid for my tuition, and I really was there to prepare for a legal career—and that only," he said.

Davis added that "luck" helped his transition into music.

"I liked music but I listened in a very ordinary way, like anyone would listen to the radio," he said. "I never collected records, or wanted to be a fly on the wall in a studio. I did adopt the philosophy that if you're going to be counsel to a company, you learn everything you can about a business. But even then it never occurred to me that I would be on the music side."

The Monterey Pop Festival in June of 1967 changed everything. He personally signed Janis Joplin's Big Brother and The Holding Company to Columbia and the rest was history.

Davis has dozens of accolades throughout the years, including being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000 as a non-performer and being inducted into the Apollo Walk of Fame at the historic theater's 2025 spring benefit in New York City.
