Bella Thorne said that she’s writing and directing Spring Breakers 2.
She was previously announced as one of the stars of the sequel, which was set to be helmed by Matthew Bright.
Thorne said, “There’s so much litness in this movie.”
Bella Thorne is continuing her directing career with a high-profile project.
After helming numerous music videos and making her feature directorial debut with the upcoming Color Your Hurt, the former Disney Channel star revealed that she’s been tapped to direct (and write) Spring Breakers 2.
“I’m writing and directing Spring Breakers 2,” Thorne said on Call Her Daddy. “Spring break forever, bitch, let’s go!”
Thorne was previously announced as one of the stars of the long-awaited sequel in 2025, along with Zombies 2 actress Ariel Martin, Stranger Things star Grace Van Dien, and I Love LA breakout True Whitaker. In that announcement, Freeway filmmaker Matthew Bright was listed as the film’s director.

Thorne said that the Spring Breakers sequel producers saw an early cut of Color Your Hurt. “They asked me to write something to see if they would like it,” she said. “And they loved it.”
The actress said that she’s “working with the original team” on the sequel, but did not specify which members of the cast or crew were returning. When host Alex Cooper asked if any of the 2012 film’s stars would reprise their roles, Thorne remained deliberately tight-lipped and took a sip of her drink without responding to the question. “I don’t wanna get in trouble,” she said.
Thorne explained how the film will differ from the 2012 original, which was directed by Harmony Korine and starred James Franco, Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine.
“The female energy is there, girl, for sure,” she said. “2012, which is like when the movie came out, was such an exploitative time, and everyone was going through it. At that time, me and Miley [Cyrus] and Zendaya and Selena and everybody being compared of who was gonna be that next bad girl, and everything happening, it felt like that was the time, too, and this time, things are different. They are crazy. There’s a lot of craziness. There’s a lot of litness. There’s so much litness in this movie.”

Thorne continued to tease the tone of the film. “What I can say is it is so litty, litty McTitties,” she said. “I mean, from start to finish, it’s lit as f---. We are having fun. If you wanted to go to the theater and have fun, you’re gonna have fun with this movie, that’s for sure. It’s balls to the wall. That’s what everyone says when they read the script: Balls to the wall.”

The actress said that she was a massive fan of the original film when it was first released. “When Spring Breakers came out, I begged my manager to let me go to the premiere,” she said. “I was at that premiere. So you can do the age math as well. I was there, and I begged. I begged. That’s why I love my manager.”
Thorne also made her way to the afterparty because she “wanted to see the girls.”
She later reflected on why the first film connected with her. “That was such a cultural moment in time, and everyone just becoming a woman and questioning being a woman and what that’s gonna look like for the rest of your life,” she said. “And then you have these girls doing these things in this movie, and it was just like, on the big screen. It was big screen, that movie. That was a big screen movie.”
Producers first announced their intentions to make a Spring Breakers sequel in 2014 without Korine or Franco’s involvement. Franco criticized the idea at the time.
“The original was wholly Harmony’s creation and these producers are capitalizing on that innovative film to make money on a weak sequel,” Franco wrote. “I want everyone to know that whoever is involved in the sequel is jumping on board a poison ship. It will be a terrible film, with a horrible reason d’être: to make money off someone else’s creativity.”

Hanley later responded with a statement of his own. “Franco is a sequel junkie in his own reality, embracing the too big to fail studio system that is his meal ticket to dilettante artistic side shows, while he glibly attacks real independent filmmakers dedicated to independent points of view,” Chris Hanley told Variety. He said the next Spring Breakers film will make the first one look like “some Disney girls trying to get a new lease on life.”
Development on that iteration of the sequel stalled, and little was said about the project until last year.
